Some names are hidden for a reason.

After her mother's funeral, Ruby finds an old photograph — worn, the date smudged beyond reading. Her mother smiling, arms around a stranger, in front of a bistro. A name on the back. And a city. New Orleans.

Raven rolls in from the west, drifting more than driving, chasing a beginning that never holds still — until something in New Orleans finally turns to meet her.

The city carries a frequency, same as a bloodline. Ruby and Raven arrive, as if pulled by the same current — strangers to each other, yet not strangers at all.

What gathers around them is what carries them. The people, the meals, and candlelit porches have a rhythm all their own. And buried secrets rise up like the cypress and its tangled roots.

New Orleans does not give without asking something in return. It has been keeping count for a very long time.

Every crossing carries a cost.
